The American Survivalist Ferro Rod is 5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick, rated for over 15,000 strikes. The hardened steel striker has a sharp edge that bites into the ferrocerium and peels off a shower of white-hot sparks. AMERICAN SURVIVALIST is engraved into the face. The handle is paracord, hand-tied around the rod, with an emergency whistle clipped to the lanyard. Everything stays together. Drop the kit in a pocket, a pack, a vehicle kit, or a bug-out bag and forget about it until you need it.

Use it for camping, bushcraft, hunting, hiking, emergency preparedness, or just learning the old way to light a fire. The sparks are hot enough to ignite tinder, char cloth, dry grass, birch bark, fatwood, cotton balls, and jute twine. It works in the rain, in the wind, at altitude where butane lighters fail, and after it's been submerged in water. Pat it dry first.

Strip the coating

A few firm scrapes expose the bare silver ferrocerium. Do it at home, not in the rain.

Prep the tinder first

Birch bark, fatwood shavings, dry grass, or a cotton ball. A fist-sized nest, arranged before you strike.

Push striker, pull rod

Striker at 45 degrees over the nest. Push the striker forward and pull the rod back at the same time: the opposing motion dumps a full shower of sparks without smashing your tinder.

Does it really work soaked?

Yes. Ferrocerium doesn't care about water. Dry the rod on your pants and it throws the same shower of sparks soaked as it does bone dry. That's the whole point of carrying one over a lighter.

Why am I not getting sparks out of the box?

The rod ships with a protective coating so it doesn't oxidize in storage. Your first few strikes scrape it off. The moment you see bare silver ferrocerium underneath, it throws fire. Normal, not a defect.

I've never used a ferro rod. Will I actually get a fire lit?

Yes. The half-inch diameter puts more ferrocerium against the striker on every pass, so you get a bigger shower of sparks with less technique. Push the striker forward and pull the rod back at the same time: that opposing motion is what throws the shower.

How long does one last?

Rated past 15,000 strikes. Light a fire every single day and you're set for over a decade. Use it weekly, hand it down anyway.

What's on the lanyard?

Hand-tied 550 paracord with an emergency whistle. Seven inner strands of cordage you can strip out for tinder, snares, or repairs, plus a whistle for the day getting found matters more than getting warm.

What's the difference between Black and OD Green?

Just the color of the rod. Same ferrocerium, same striker, same performance. Pick the one that disappears into your kit or the one you'll find fast in the dark. Blaze Orange joins the lineup soon.

What tinder should I use?
